Course objective

Course: Serbian as a Foreign Language is designed as an intensive, but fun and interactive way to learn the Serbian language. Through online workshops, participants will acquire basic communicative skills in the Serbian language that enable them to communicate every day in various private and educational situations. Through the course, spoken and written communication skills are built, with a gradual expansion of vocabulary. The goal is to create a relaxed and friendly atmosphere in which we learn without fear of mistakes, develop language confidence and self-confidence. The course also includes didactic games that facilitate the acquisition of grammatical and language structures, encourage active learning and interaction among participants.

Who is the course for?

Students from abroad who are already studying at the Belgrade Metropolitan University.
Students from abroad who plan to study at the Belgrade Metropolitan University.
Foreigners of any age who are planning a longer stay in the Republic of Serbia and want to get a job or start their own business.

What will you learn?

The course covers the A1 level in mastering the Serbian language and consists of two sublevels: A1.1 (absolute beginners) and A1.2 (beginners with basic knowledge). The course consists of 13 workshops (2.5 hours or 3 hours), which will be held over 6 weeks. The last workshop is a test to check the acquired knowledge.
 
The course covers basic language skills in four areas:

hearing listening
library_books reading
edit_note writing
record_voice_over speaking
Modules A1.1 and A1.2 include:

  • Alphabet and spelling: You will learn to use both alphabets – Latin and Cyrillic, as well as the correct spelling of words and the use of punctuation.
  • Vocabulary: Through topic areas such as presentation, daily activities, health, food, education and many others, you will expand your vocabulary.
  • Grammar: You will master the basics of morphology and syntax, including the use of nouns, verbs and adjective forms, as well as the correct arrangement of words in a sentence.
  • Speaking skills: You will learn how to talk about yourself, participate in simple conversations and pronounce sentences correctly with appropriate intonation.

Course delivery:

Workshops will be held online. All participants will have access to the teaching materials provided for the course.
The course is organized in 12 workshops, which are held twice a week for 3 hours:

1. LESSON New knowledge, demonstrative examples, exercises.
2. CLASS Listening and tasks related to illustrations, language games.
3. LESSON Reading, tasks with texts, language games.

Final Test: At the end of the course, participants take a final test that includes:

  • Listening: Dictation in Cyrillic, spelling check.
  • Reading: Cyrillic text and answering questions related to the text.
  • Grammar and spelling: Testing grammar rules.
  • Conversation: Description of a person or situation based on the words offered.
Metropolitan University Certificate

At the last workshop, participants take the final test and after successful completion of the course, they receive a certificate from Belgrade Metropolitan University.

Course moderator

The course is led by dr Tanja Rusimović, an experienced pedagogist and long-time mentor, who is guided by the maxim that knowledge of other languages represents wealth and a view of life from a different angle. Tanja is the winner of prestigious awards, including the Award of the Society for Serbian Language and Literature and the Sveti Sava Award. She is the author of the book „Only Dreamed Spaces of Happiness“, and she is a lecturer at the Faculty of Foreign Languages of Belgrade Metropolitan University. The professor has extensive experience in teaching Serbian language to foreign students, and is also a mentor on projects that develop communication skills and critical thinking.
